What Airlines service Belize?
Most likely you will find yourself traveling one of these airlines. In most cases, Here’s Hope utilizes U.S. Airways or American.
How can I communicate with my family from Belize?
There are a couple of options for communicating with home. There is a computer at Hosanna House from which you can e-mail your family, or you can purchase a Belize telephone calling card in order to call from Hosanna House. Because both of these resources are shared by the children’s home, we do ask that you consider the length and frequency of their use.
If you have a phone serviced by Verizon in the states, you may be able to use that phone on the local Belize system; however, you will need to contact Verizon prior to your departure in order to arrange for use in Belize.
Is there electricity at the Here’s Hope facility?
Absolutely! Well, at least most of the time. Like most developing nations, Belize’s infrastructure is prone to occasional failure; however, those outages are fairly infrequent.
Do I need any type of power adapter to use my American electronics in Belize?
No. Belize utilizes the same 110v power source that we do, so no adapter or converter is necessary in the country.
What about bugs?
Like any tropical area, Belize has its share of insects. The two you are most likely to encounter are mosquitoes and No-see-ums. Both are worse during the summer and fall rainy seasons, but are easily controlled with the use of a DEET or Picaridin based repellent. In both cases, the higher the concentration of the active ingredient, the better and longer lasting the effects. Mosquitoes are typically not bad at the Here’s Hope facility, but you will find them in greater numbers when we travel to the Maya Ruins and other outlying areas.
What time zone is Belize in?
Belize operates 6 hours behind GMT and does not observe Daylight Savings Time. That means from late spring to early fall, Belize is 2 hours behind Eastern Daylight Savings Time and from late fall through early spring, they are one hour behind.
Do I need a passport to travel to Belize?
YES! You will not be allowed into Belize or back into the US without a current valid passport. If you are applying for your passport with less than 12 weeks remaining before your trip, we would strongly encourage you to pay the extra fee to expedite the processing of your document.
What about vaccinations?
We would always advise maintaining a current tetanus vaccination. The areas of Belize where we will be traveling are not known for regular occurrences of Malaria; however, we would always recommend talking with your doctor and reading the information provided by the U.S. Center For Disease Control and the World Health Organization for the latest information prior to traveling. Some preemptive regimens require several weeks of treatment prior to departure to a foreign country, so it is suggested that you see your doctor well in advance of your planned trip.
